Identify before measuring
Photograph the entire door from both sides, including its panels, edges, handles and adjacent glazing. Record any visible manufacturer information. A wood-like finish does not establish the internal construction. Keep uncertain details clearly marked so the installer knows what needs confirmation. Do not drill or remove material to identify a door for this brief.
Keep product fit and door suitability separate
Hale’s Door Model page states its supported thickness range and describes the cover direction. Those are requirements for that model. They do not establish that a particular door can be altered, that an opening may be placed anywhere in it or that existing ratings and warranties remain valid. Ask the relevant door maker and installer to confirm the proposed work for your exact assembly.
Account for the whole movement
Record where the door swings or slides, where the pet waits and whether furniture or trim would interfere with the approach. Ask the supplier how the selected cover is inserted, removed and secured. An opening that looks clear in a still photo may be obstructed when the door is open or the cover is being handled. Include those questions in the plan before settling on placement.
Agree on the finished result
A useful quote names the approved door and pet-door model, the work included, who supplies the parts and how the door will be checked after installation. Ask who handles finishing, adjustment and follow-up if the original door no longer operates as expected. Request the current installation documents and a clear record of the agreed scope. Pet measurements remain separate from the installer’s cutting information.
